On Monday 22^nd May, Year 7 & 8 were incredibly lucky to hear a talk from Louise D’Costa, the Editor-in-Chief of The Tandridge Independent. Louise spoke to them about a wide variety of careers in the media industry, both in television and print media. She gave insight into her career starting as a runner for Children’s BBC, working on Panorama and Newsnight, up to the present day owning and running the newspaper.

Year 9 had the privilege of having a virtual careers Employer Encounter from Giles Thomas, the Operations Director for Manor Collection, a group of hotels in the South East. He described his career path to his current role and what other jobs are available in the hospitality industry.

Year 10 enjoyed a talk from Lyndsey Gallagher, the Chief Operating Officer from The Gallagher Group, about her career in the construction industry. She discussed the challenges she has faced and overcome, and what it has taken for her to become such a successful businesswoman. Lyndsey supports Warlingham School & Sixth Form College as our Enterprise Adviser, supporting various initiatives across the school. One of our Year 10 students was even lucky enough to impress Lyndsey so much she offered him a Work Experience placement on the spot!

Students also completed a wide variety of activities in all their lessons and Home Learning linking careers to the curriculum. These included: 

Art

Year 9 students participated in a paired portrait task where students simulated working for the Metropolitan Police as a sketch artist where they interviewed a witness/victim. Their partner sat opposite described the criminal, whilst they made a sketch according to their description of details.

Maths

Year 7 became event planners with a party planning and budgeting activity and Year 8 and 9 became data analysts.

Health and Social Care

Year 10 researched careers and created presentations on key jobs in the care sector.

Media and Film

Sixth Form College students were asked to explain the different job roles and potential career paths in the media industry.

Science

All students completed various quizzes to determine what type of scientist they were and visited a virtual STEM careers fair.

English

All students carried out a careers research task and gave a presentation in lesson to develop their communication skills as well as learning about the value of English to future careers.

Design & Technology

Students completed activities based around current and future jobs and the ever-changing job market, DT skills in action and different case studies/careers stories.

This is not everything that went on around the school! Students have found this week to be a valuable insight into the world of work and enabled them to see the value of the subjects that they are studying to their future careers.
