Paired Reading
In our Ofsted inspection last year, Ofsted reported that “all pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure” and each year, we run a Paired Reading scheme, which partners Year 7 and 8 students with Sixth Formers to read together.
Taking place every Thursday morning in the LRC, the atmosphere in the sessions has been calm and collaborative, giving many students the opportunity to build their confidence in reading and to develop positive reading habits. It is also an important aspect of the Community Engagement aspect of the Advance Award which our Year 12 & 13 students work towards during their time in the College. We have recently concluded the scheme for this academic year involving over 50 students who have demonstrated excellent progression in their reading. We can't wait to continue with the scheme with new and returning faces next year.
Year 12 student, Amelia C, gives her view on the scheme below:
Paired reading allows lower school students to really flourish and, to not only become stronger readers, but also more confident young children. Paired reading also gives the Sixth Formers a sense of responsibility - it is very heart-warming to know you are helping a child expand their reading skills.
