Why should I study CTEC Health and Social Care?

The Health and Social Care sector will have more than 14.5 million available jobs worldwide by 2030. 

The CTEC Health and Social Care has been designed in collaboration with experts spanning the breadth of the sector.  It focusses on the skills, knowledge and understanding that today’s universities and employers demand. This will allow students to offer specific, person-centred care and support and build positive relationships with the people they are working with, so that their need and requirements are met whilst they maintain control of their own care.

 

Studying this subject will enable you to:

• Understand professional relationships in the health and social care sector.
• Understand the implications of diversity on practice and also the effects of discriminatory practice on individuals who require care or support.
• Acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to equip you in maintaining a safe working environment.
• Understand why eating, breathing and controlling our bodies are so important in maintaining life and the impact of nutrition on wellbeing and health
• Understand development - from conception to a one-year-old child.

Course Specification

Health and Social Care is an exciting qualification equivalent to one A Level which covers areas including equality, diversity and rights in health and social care; health, safety and security in health and social care; anatomy and physiology for health and social care; personalisation and a person-centred approach to care and safeguarding.

Students will consider the real impacts to people living with conditions or illnesses such as the social, financial and psychological impacts, not just the signs, symptoms and treatment of faceless conditions or illnesses.

Students will also learn about the legislation and guidance supporting health and social care, so that they can ensure the people they are working with are not only able to access all the care and support they are entitled to, but are also able to protect themselves from any harm or abuse whilst at work.

Unit 1: Building positive relationships in Health and Social Care

Unit 2: Equality, diversity and rights in Health and Social Care

Unit 3: Health, safety and security in Health and Social Care

Unit 4: Anatomy and physiology for Health and Social Care

Unit 13: Sexual health, reproduction and early development stages

Unit 24: Public Health

Assessment Format

Students must complete six units to obtain the Extended Certificate.

Three units are assessed via coursework.  (Unit 1, 13 and 24)

Three units are each assessed via a separate, written examination (each 1hr 30mins to 2hrs in duration).  Each examination consists of short and long answer questions.  (Units 2, 3 and 4 )

 

Course Entry Requirements

This course requires at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including Merit or above in Level 2 Health and Social Care (if taken).

 

Employability Skills

Employability Skills are essential skills, personal qualities and values that will enable you to thrive in any workplace. Along with good technical understanding and subject knowledge, employers often outline a set of skills that they want from an employee.

This course will help you to develop the following employability skills:

• The course can be specific for a future career in health and social care.
• The course provides you with transferable IT, Literacy and Numeracy skills.
• The subject improves independent study skills as well as Interpersonal skills.
• There is a work experience component to the course.

Next Steps

Cambridge Technicals provide a strong base for progression to university, apprenticeships or work and are recognised for UCAS tariff points.  

Health and Social Care students often go onto university/college or into employment in: nursing, midwifery, radiography, education, police, probation service, social work, mental health, counselling and health promotion.
